Unlike many other perfume ingredients, citrus essences are typically extracted through expression or cold-pressing—a method that gently squeezes the fruit peel to capture the pure, fresh oils inside without the use of heat. An interesting exception is petitgrain, which comes not from the fruit but from the twigs and leaves of the bitter orange tree.
